Mira, 18ans, je vien d'obtenir mon bac...franchement, au début j'ai commencé a lire ce livre juste pour passé le temps -plus exactement au début de l'été, alors que j'attendé mes resultats du bac ,pour oublié un peu - et ce livrea réussi a me destressé,d'ailleur j'ai réussi a comprenre ce livre parceque on a fait au cours de phylosophie, le capitaliste, et l'idée de CARLE MARXE, a crée le socialisme, et j'addoré ca...bref, Emile Zola a réussi a nous fair partagé les peins des peuples des mineurs, et moi, il m'a baucoup plu ce livre, d'ailleur , chui pas dutout le genr de fille qui boukine, et c'est mon 1er boukain -aprés le secret de jeséphine- , et emile zola a réussi a me fair aimé la lecturepour moi, Emile Zola est vraiment un ecrivant hore pair....je vous conseil vivment de lire ce livre, il est vraiment extra

My knowledge about Emile Zola had been limited to his letter, J'accuse, and his trial. Germinal was the first book I read and I just wish I had become familiar with his work much earlier.One cannot really say that one enjoys Germinal, because the content is shows some really depressing aspects of life of human beings. And yet it was not easy to put the book down. This 1951 edition had an introduction by the translator, Havelock Ellis. Friends who have read a much later translation made the right decision, as in 1951 edition one missed a map, and some of the language would have meant a lot more to those with knowledge of the French language.However, Germinal is a must for anyone who needs to begin to understand the awful conditions the miners lived in the second half of the nineteenth century, and how their lives contrasted with those of the bourgeoisie. Yet the book must help any reader get an understanding about historical and contemporary rebellions or struggles by people who are existing in awful circumstances. These people have the courage to try and fight, and even when they seem to be losing, they do not want to give up. Those of us who are fortunate enough to live in financial and material comfort are shown that a revolution, like the French Revolution, does not resolve all human problems.But at the same time, human beings do not give up. In this respect Germinal is an appropriate title. It indicates spring in French, but it also suggests failure does not mean the end. The last sentence in the book is revealing:"men were springing forth, a black avenging army, germinating slowly in the furrows, growing towards the harvests of the next century, and their germination would soon overturn the earth."Zola is able to describe his characters very well, and at the same time, his perception of different human relationships, for example, linked to love, jealousy and so on is brilliant. In order to get the most out of the book, it needs to be studied, not just read.
Entire families down in the coal mine and they're still hungry. One can see how a classic like this, with its uninhibited sex, graphic violence, and communist tone, wouldn't fit in a lot of American classrooms. *Germinal* should be required reading for Union bosses or anyone on either side of a potential workers' strike, which I now better understand should be used an absolutely last resort or nothing. Still it's not a screed but a good action story with an atypical love story added. Not for everyone: hard-core and depressing.
The use of the word "justice" in this book is a profanation. GERMINAL "justice" is lawless, disorderly, plagued by a laughable theory of property and in violation of every criterion of the doctrine of just war. There was a peaceful alternative to the violence, namely, GO FIND ANOTHER JOB! That no employer ever made money by chasing his competent employees away is common sense. GERMINAL "justice" is an attack on the individual's right to trade, the individual's right to property, the rule of law and the moral legitimacy of individual responsibility.It gets worse.This book is like a novelization of a splatter film written by a very preachy member of the Manson family, explaining how Sharon Tate and the LaBiancas were asking for it. Tragedians and hagiographers have depicted savagery, but, unlike Zola, they didn’t wallow in it, nor did they cheer for the savages. More than once Zola has one of the characters say, “Destroy everythingâ€. And the final words of the novel are “…and their germination would soon overturn the earth.â€If anything was overturned, it wasn’t because of this book. No better case for Right-wing dictatorship has ever been made. Nobody would ever believe that the pea-brained monsters in this book, destroying their own tools and murdering, could usher in a new age of brotherhood, wisdom and justice. If GERMINAL were all we had to go by, most people would have preferred repression to revolution.The biggest surprise of this hallowed book is Zola’s writing. Its faults can’t all be the translator’s. Try to picture this scene in your mind:“The moon, still beneath the horizon, only lit up the top most branches, and the crowd, remaining in the darkness, stood above it at the top of the slope like a bar of shadow.â€GERMINAL is overwritten and full of tiresome ideological pronouncements. There are other difficulties: difficulty in describing complex scenes, unattributed quotations, stilted preachy dialogue and a long list of characters who should have never been named. Only the following characters are interesting or developed:Etienne -- the upwardly mobile revolutionist and murdererMaheude -- the harridan and desecrator of human remainsRasseneur -- the publicanSouvarine -- the nihilist and murdererJeanlin -- the guttersnipe and murdererHennebeau -- the cuckoldEveryone else is a cipher or caricature.What little admiration I have for GERMINAL is based on the fast-paced action in Chapter 5 in Part 7. Also the long part at the end of this chapter when the miners are waiting to be rescued achieves a good hypnotic effect.Should your children read this? No. It's a moral disaster. There are many better and more serious alternatives that cover these issues, some of them written by socialist writers.1.5 stars
